ZINGA

Lufeng Jiahuwan Power Plant

World’s largest coal fired power plant (8 x 1000 MW) located at south eastern coast of Guangdong Province, China’s heavy duty economic powerhouse. 4 equal phases scheduled to be built over 8 years, commencing June 2016, each of 2 x 1000 MW output and with state of the art technology for reduction of carbon emissions. Each phase requires 45 000 tons of structural steelworks. About 64 of the steel has been coated with ZINGA® as unique system 2 x 75 = 150 µm. The total ZINGA ® consumption was about 321 tons. The smaller sized steel members, or 16 200 tons in total, were protected by HDG.

The coating works started in June 2016 and were finished in August 2018. Coating supervision inspection services stipulated as mandatory by the client and strictly complied with by Zingametall Primo Corporation from start to finish. The commissioning and official opening of the Lufeng Jiahuwan Power plant (Phase 1) was held on 15 April 2019.

New Shougang Bridge – Beijing

The design of the bridge is from the Belgian architect Nicolas GODELET of Beijing Gejian Architectural Design Consulting Co Ltd and living in Beijing It is an entirely welded steel structure with 45 000 tonnes of steel plates (more than for the National Stadium “Bird’s Nest”).

Coating with ZINGA started in 2017. In total 182 tons of ZINGA was used (internal and external of steel structure). It is the world’s first twin tower cable stayed steel composite bridge. 1 354 meters in length and 54 9 meters in width. It is the highest bridge in Beijing City with two distinct steel arch towers of 125 and 90 meters, 4 lanes in both directions, and it is the widest bridge in China. The bridge opened to trafic on 29 September 2019.

The external was coated with ZINGA 1 x 60 µm DFT and topcoated with AkzoNobel I.P. mid- and topcoats. The internal application was a ZINGA-unique system of 1 x 80 µm DFT.

Kiosk Kouter in Ghent

The Kouter is a square in the center of the Flemish city of Ghent. Older names for this square are “Paardenmarkt”, and “Place d’Armes”. The square was traditionally used not only for all kinds of celebrations, but also for people’s congresses in the city. Since 1772, a flower market is held on Sundays. During the Ghent Festival is the location of the “Ball 1900”.

The Kouter  is surrounded by stately, mostly nineteenth-century buildings, including the Trade Stock Exchange.

In the square there is a late 19th-century cast-iron kiosk, built to a design by the Ghent architect Adolphe Pauli in 1878.  On Sunday, the kiosk served as a stage for concerts for the middle class and on Wednesday common people could also attend. In the 19th century there were six music kiosks in the center of Ghent, now there’s only two left.

In 1998 the kiosk was refurbished by the company IBT from Oosterzele. The entire structure was coated with a primer coat of ZINGA followed by a topcoat.

E.ON Power Station Plant

The power station of Langerlo was built in 1976, with two units powered by fuel oil. In 1986, the power station was converted to a coal power station, due to its proximity to the coal mines located in Genk. Since mining activity in Belgium declined and ceased in 1992 with the closing of the last mine in Zolder, the power station in Langerlo remained the last one driven by coal. In 1997 and 1999 the power station was enlarged. In 1999 the fume and gas purification was expanded and 2 gas turbines were built. Today the power station has a capacity of 556 MW, driven by a mix of coal, biomass(pellets) and gas.

For the expansion plans in 1997, ZINGA was prescribed for corrosion protection of 7500 m² construction steel by the engineering company Tractebel.
Even before, ZINGA was already a stock item at Electrabel companies for patch repair. Because of the expansion, several large beams turned out to be too big for HDG at local galvanisers’ baths and hence were treated with ZINGA.

The beams were coated with 2 x 60 μm DFT after steel fabrication at Victor Buyck to provide a good corrosion protection in a harsh industrial environment.
An inspection at the Power Station in 2014 (after 17 years), now run by Electricity company E.ON, found the beams in good condition showing no signs of corrosion and with a Zinc depletion of only 20 μm DFT.

ISO 12944 on ZINGA + Zingalufer

ISO 12944-6: Paints and varnishes — Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems
The ISO 12944 standard is intended to assist engineers and corrosion experts in adopting best practice in corrosion protection of structural steel with coatings at new construction and repairs. ISO 12944 is progressively superseding regional standards to become a truly global benchmark in corrosion control.

The ZINGA/Zingalufer system has been subjected to extensive testing such as water condensation
test, neutral salt spray test, chemical resistance test and water immersion test. After a prescribed exposure test (depending on representative environment), the coating is assessed for adhesion, blistering, rusting, cracking and flaking.

Environments are classified according corrosivity:

  • C1: Indoor conditions (Heated buildings/neutral atmosphere)
  • C2: Rural areas, low pollution (countryside, inland town areas)
  • C3: Urban and industrial atmospheres with moderate sulphur dioxide levels and salinity. Production areas with high humidity (inland big cities with high traffic)
  • C4: Industrial or coastal (with moderate salinity) zones (chemical factories, swimming pools, shipyards)
  • C5I: Industrial zones with high humidity and aggressive environment (continuous condensation and high pollution)
  • C5M: Coastal zones and marine zones with high salinity (continuous condensation and high pollution)

After exposure, the coating is evaluated as H(igh), M(edium) or L(ow); reflecting in a life expectancy of:
Low: Life expectancy less than 5 years
Medium: Life expectancy between 5 and 15 years
High: Life expectancy more than 15 years

PSA Lighting Masts

PSA (Port of Singapore Authority), is the 4th largest port in the world and the second busiest after Rotterdam. ZINGA was selected to be coated on 30 lighting masts.
Each lighting mast measures 45 meters in height within minimum DFT of 120 microns.
At this moment 90% of the light masts in this harbor are protected with ZINGA . The first light masts were treated in 2002.
Being at the container area, most of the lighting masts (previously protected by hot-dip) were installed near to the sea coast and were found to be quite rusty.
